Customs Duty on Luxury Goods in India: What You'll Actually Pay

If you've ever priced a bag on a European resale site and then flinched at what it cost to actually get it to your door in India, you're not imagining things. Import duty on luxury goods brought into India is calculated on more than just the item's price — and the exact rate depends on the product category, its declared value, and how it's being shipped.

Broadly, imported goods into India attract Basic Customs Duty plus additional levies including IGST (Integrated GST), which together typically push the landed cost well above the sticker price you saw abroad. Leather goods, apparel, and accessories are each classified under different tariff codes, so a handbag and a watch from the same shipment can be taxed differently.

This is exactly the calculation most global resale platforms don't do for you. They'll happily sell you the bag — getting it through customs cleanly, with duties paid and no surprise bill on delivery day, is a separate problem entirely, and it's the one we built Provenance to solve.

A few things worth knowing before you buy internationally on your own:

Declared value matters. Customs assesses duty based on the transaction value, not an arbitrary number — under-declaring is not a workaround, it's a compliance risk.

Personal shipments and commercial imports are treated differently. A single item shipped to you personally follows different rules than freight brought in for resale.

Rates change. Government tariff schedules are revised periodically, so a number that was accurate a year ago may not be today.

None of this is legal or tax advice — for anything beyond a general estimate, a licensed customs broker or the current CBIC tariff schedule is the actual source of truth. What we can tell you is this: every price you see on Provenance already has duties and customs handling built in. The number on the product page is the number you pay.
