Customs & Duties
How Much Does It Really Cost to Import a Designer Bag to India?
Say you find a bag on an overseas resale site for a price that seems genuinely reasonable. Before you check out, it's worth understanding everything that gets added between that number and the one you'll actually pay.
Shipping. International couriers price by weight, dimensions, and destination — a leather bag with structured hardware often costs more to ship than its packaging weight alone would suggest, since dimensional weight pricing kicks in.
Import duty and IGST. As covered in our piece on customs duty, this is calculated on the declared transaction value and varies by product category. This is usually the single largest addition to the sticker price.
Currency conversion spread. Your card issuer or payment processor typically applies a margin on top of the market exchange rate — often 1-3%, sometimes more, depending on the provider.
Customs clearance and handling fees. Many couriers charge a separate brokerage fee just to process the customs paperwork on your behalf, on top of the duty itself.
Add these up on a platform that doesn't disclose them upfront, and it's common for the "landed cost" to run 40-60% above the number you saw at checkout — sometimes arriving as a surprise bill from the courier before they'll release your package.
This is the exact stack of costs Provenance folds into the price shown on every listing. There's no second invoice waiting for you at your door — duties, clearance, and delivery are already accounted for in the number you see when you add something to your cart.
